The Master Goes the Extra Mile

As part of the Company of Entrepreneurs commitment to its charitable endeavours, I undertook to
run the 13.1 mile London Landmarks Half Marathon to raise money for our Entrepreneurs Trust.

On the cold and blustery morning of April 2 nd , I loaded up on carbohydrates, donned my best running
gear and put my best foot forward alongside almost 20,000 other runners. Starting out from Pall
Mall, the route skirted through Chinatown and the West End before heading into the City where we
took in the sights of the Old Bailey and St Paul’s Cathedral. On approaching Guildhall yard, I was
heartily cheered along by Freemen Entrepreneurs who had made the special trip into the City to
support me. Chief amongst these were Senior Warden, Mark Huxley and Court Assistant, Stephen
Wheatley who, by magic, also managed to further appear to continue their support on Basinghall
Street and also on Lower Thames Street. The criss-cross course afforded them the opportunity to
cheer me along at three points, which I was immensely grateful for.

By the time I reached the Tower of London, at mile 9.5, my body was starting to protest and slow
down but the support of the crowd with all their cheering, kept me going back alongside the Thames
into Westminster. Having my name emblazoned in white upon the top of my black shirt allowed lots
of people to cheer me on by name as I crossed Westminster Bridge southwards, and then returned
immediately northwards, as I forged (ok, in all honesty “staggered”) my way towards the finish line
at the end of Downing Street.

My endeavours were rewarded with a finishing time of 2 hour 24 minutes, which was slower than I
had hoped, but, on reflection, was an acceptable time for someone who was previously a dedicated
non-runner.

The day was incredibly memorable for many reasons, and I am very pleased that I decided to
undertake the challenge. I would encourage anyone who wants to get fit and be a bit more healthy,
to do something like this event.

I have received the support of many of my fellow Freemen Entrepreneurs, for which I am incredibly
grateful. The JustGiving campaign for our Entrepreneurs Trust stands at just over £3,000 including
gift aid and I’d love to get it a bit higher. Anybody who would like contribute, can do so via this link,
and will receive my grateful thanks.
