Lord Mayor’s Banquet

Every year in November, a new Lord Mayor is installed in the City of London. This happens at a ceremony on a Friday, called the Silent Ceremony. The Lord Mayor who has served for a year becomes the late Lord Mayor. The next day, there is the Lord Mayor’s Show. This year the show was on Saturday 13 November and the Company of Entrepreneurs were represented by the Master and Wardens who walked in the Show. Thank you to all Entrepreneurs who lined the route and waved to us.

Following on from the Lord Mayor’s Show, the Lord Mayor’s Banquet happens on the following Monday at Guildhall. At this dinner, the Prime Minister, Archbishop of Canterbury, the Lord Speaker of the House of Lords and the Speaker of the House of Commons are presented to the new Lord Mayor. It is also an opportunity for the participants to thank the late Lord Mayor.

During the whole weekend, there is a group of people who are acting as an honour guard for the Lord Mayor and his guests. This group is the Lord Mayor’s and Sheriffs’ Committee. I had the pleasure to be on this committee this year, so was involved in all of the activities. At the Silent Ceremony, we walked in to Guildhall ahead of the outgoing and incoming Lord Mayor and we congratulated the newly installed Lord Mayor after his installation. At the Banquet, we entertained some of the important guests before leading them in to be introduced to the new Lord Mayor. I was briefly introducing myself to the Prime Minister, making sure I spread the awareness of the Company of Entrepreneurs.

It was an excellent weekend, and it was interesting to see some new aspects of the City and its traditions. As always, my suggestion to you all is: Get involved!
