As many following the England v India Test at The Oval will attest, the weather across South East London offered little encouragement for outdoor pursuits yesterday. However, while the cricket faced its challenges, just a stone’s throw away at the London Pétanque Club in Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, the spirit of Livery fellowship prevailed, and the Inter-Livery Pétanque Tournament pressed on undeterred.
Against all forecasts, the clouds parted just as the first boules were poised for play, with a welcome burst of sunshine lifting both umbrellas and spirits. The fine Mirabeau rosé, generously provided by the event sponsors, brought further cheer to participants and spectators alike.

Representing The Company of Entrepreneurs, our spirited team, Judy Hadden, Shernaz Engineer & Tony Matharu began our campaign against a team of Clerks, led by our own Clerk, Mr Duncan Simms. Despite a valiant effort, we narrowly lost 6–4, with Mr Simms clearly demonstrating the benefits of dedicated practice.
Undeterred, we went on to secure a resounding 9–0 victory over last year’s champions, the Spectacle Makers—an achievement that bolstered team morale. Our next match against the Needlemakers proved more challenging, bringing our tournament journey to a close, but not without camaraderie, determination, and good humour throughout.
A heartfelt thank you goes to my team mates, in particular Shernaz, who showed extraordinary team spirit. Initially stepping in to ensure we retained our place in the tournament, she finished the evening a true Pétanque enthusiast, and has already confirmed her place in next year’s team.

Events such as these exemplify the Livery spirit, community, fellowship, and the shared joy of participation. We extend our gratitude to the organisers and fellow competitors for an evening filled with good company and good sport. Plans for our 2026 return are already underway!
