The Master's Quarterly Zoom - April 2025

The Master’s Quarterly Zooms are a hit! Fast-paced and informative, members and guests love the lively format, the witty repartee, and the glimpses of the Clerk’s spare bedroom!

Topics were too numerous to count, but the Master began with an overview of the hectic and historic first few months of the Worshipful Company of Entrepreneurs. Pancake Racing was in there, alongside more serious visits to three leading business schools. Liveryman Paddy Willis described the inaugural Livery Entrepreneurs Challenge, which involved 20 schools and six ancient Livery Companies with important interests in education. The event was successful, with positive feedback from students and teachers, and there are plans to repeat and potentially expand it in the future. Paddy also gave a little teaser about a charity event for Freeman and Liverymen using the same simulation.

The Master made special mention of Freeman Tony Matharu’s generosity in sponsoring and evening of charity and Livery – raising £4,000 (£2,000 each for the Trust and for Integrity International Trust) and was well-attended by guests from various Companies. The first ever Livery Clothing Ceremony held in Drapers’ Hall was superb. The Spring Lunch at the Reform Club was attended by over 80 people, and the Lady Mayoress gave a speech on International Women's Day. Liveryman Belinda Back spoke at the Spring Lunch about her experience as a female foreign entrepreneur – complementing the Lady Mayoress’s remarks about enterprise as a partnership.

Court Assistant Shernaz Engineer shared her experience of the Lady's Lunch organized by Liveryman Tee Dobinson, which included games and a tour of the Ham Yard Hotel.

The Raleigh Lecture continues to enrich education, with another hundred sixth-formers gaining inspritation and knowledge from this superb event back in Febraury.

Make An Impact was reviewed, praising the generosity of the sponsor, Ben West of St James’s Place, and highlighting the key contribution that members can make in schools, incubators, and start-ups. huge thanks to the Education and Outreach teams for that.

There was also an opportunity to look ahead to the Master’s Weekend trip to Bristol from the 16th to the 18th May, which includes a visit to the SS Great Britain, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a talk with the Bristol Business School, wine tasting at Avery's, and a dinner.

The Clerk added that there will be a new members' breakfast on the 21st of May at Cote Brasserie, St. Paul's, aimed at welcoming new members and providing information about opportunities.

Shernaz announced a racing day event at Windsor on the 16th of June, which includes a boat ride, a grandstand view, and a fish and chips supper.

The Master discussed the upcoming Election Court Banquet, which has been rescheduled due to a state banquet at Mansion House. The new date is Bastille Day, July 14th! The Clerk explained the significance of the letters patent, a document confirming the Worshipful Company of Entrepreneurs as a Livery Company of the City of London. The company will be presented with the letters patent at Mansion House, along with the admission of new Freemen, clothing of new Liverymen, and a four-course banquet. The Clerk also spoke about the Court of Aldermen's role that evening.

An second Livery Committee DEI event will be held in the evening on 22nd May at Guildhall, for which tickets are just £25.

Activities abound – sailing, shooting, and skiing are all in the offing, together with Inter-Livery Crazy Golf in October (20 Livery Companies and counting!). Horse-racing (watching, rather than riding) is on the cards for 16th June. If you would like to know more, please just ask the Clerk.
