Physical meetings of almost every kind were absent during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet thanks to the enterprising spirit of Freemen Entrepreneurs and the miracle of modern video communications, the Company admitted 22 new Freemen “by virtual presence”. Although each of them was recorded in the roll of Freemen Entrepreneurs, nevertheless, the Company of Entrepreneurs continues to formally recognise those Freemen in person, for them to have the opportunity to sign the Freedom Register, and to receive their Freedom Certificates.
So it was that of Wednesday 10th July, 2024, the Master Entrepreneur, Mr Mark Huxley, together with one of his predecessors, Mr Lars Andersen, was pleased to formally welcome in person longstanding Freeman Dr John Charles.
Originally approved for the Freedom in 2016, and admitted at the 2021 Election Court by virtual presence, the Clerk presented John to Freemen and guests at Tallow Chandlers’ Hall.
John left school before obtaining any formal qualifications, but, at 19 returned for GSEs, A Levels and a degree. Despite beginning to lose his sight, he managed to talk his way into becoming a trainee chef, and having sought funding for nearly 9 years, took it upon himself to set up his own firm and bid for work. He grew his business to employ 15 staff (many of whom were disabled or visually impaired) and 4 more after winning the catering contract for the Tideway Tunnel in a deal reportedly worth over £1m.
He won part of the catering for the 2012 Olympics and has RBS and PWC as clients, as well as catering for construction project. He has a focus on hiring marginalised people and especially ex-offenders.
John is active in a number of charities and social action groups, often as trustee, as well as advising previous governments on these issues, disability engagement, and inclusion.
The Master Entrepreneur and Past Master Andersen welcomed John formally after he renewed his commitment to the Company’s objects and oath, and presented him with his Freedom certificate. John (together with Freeman Belinda Back, who was admitted as a new Freeman that same evening), has pledged himself to serve the Company’s Outreach and charitable projects.
